Watch and clock making

Based on its experience of over a century in watch and clock making applications and its general cold-rolling competence, Lamineries MATTHEY can offer just the right solution for the special and often complex demands of innovative and prestigious watch and clock makers. Whether a mechanical luxury watch or clock that is sold in only small quantities or a mass-produced quartz movement, the products of Lamineries MATTHEY can almost always be found in the heart of the movement. Lamineries MATTHEY partners with the major producers in the watch and clock making industry in order to provide the best possible technical solutions and the high level of service expected by this very demanding market segment. The range of alloys offered for this area of application is very broad:

- Copper-beryllium which, after hardening, exhibits the highest strength of all copper alloys, is often used for the manufacture of various cogwheels, bushings, balance wheels, watch hands, tinsels etc. Lamineries MATTHEY offers copper beryllium strip and foil rolled to different tempers, or in mill hardened form, as well as rod and wire in hard drawn or mill hardened condition.

- Heat treatable steels (maraging steel) such as Durnico® (Durimphy®) and Durinox® (Ultrafort®) as well as Phynox® (Elgiloy®), a heat treatable alloy on cobalt basis, are yet another strength of Lamineries MATTHEY appreciated by the watch and clock making industry. These brands are synonymous with high-performance alloys enabling, or facilitating, the stamping and forming of highly complex and often very small parts. The forming process leaves the edges smooth and burr free which is a major advantage for these often critical parts. These alloys can be hardened, with virtually no deformation and will achieve outstanding strength and hardness, which makes the production of high-strength spring components possible.

- Thin brass strips or foil, with or without, lead are used for the manufacture of watch hands, dials, cogwheels, tinsel etc.

- Carbon steels, with or without lead, used because of their excellent forming and stamping behaviour can also be annealed and tempered to achieve a higher mechanical strength. They can however only be used for the manufacture of moderately stressed parts.

- Austenitic stainless steel is typically used in the watch and clock making industry for to its outstanding corrosion resistance. Alloy 316L (1.4404, 1.4435) is not only used for the production of voluminous parts such as housings and rings but also in the form of strips for the manufacture of chains and bracelet parts. Alloy 301 (1.4310) is used for spring components as well as other applications.
